Cast Iron Bathtub Installation Home>news

Cast iron bathtubs are heavy duty and tend to last for a very long time. Bur because of its weight, installing this type of bathtub will take two or three people. However, it is worth the effort--considering you may not have to replace the tub for a while. There are many designs to choose from, so once you have selected and purchased your bathtub and have your old tub removed, you can start with installing your new one.

    Preparation

  1. If you haven't done so already, now is the time to turn the water off--not just in the bathroom but everywhere in the house to prevent water buildup. This can prevent a disaster from happening later on.

You will need some tools before you begin--including Teflon tape, a heavy wrench, caulk, shim material, a level, Allen wrenches, a pry bar, plumber's putty and a wax ring.

    Faucets and Valves

  2. Check to see which way your faucets will need to be installed first. Some have the water supply coming in through the back, the side or the front. Attach the new faucets accordingly. If there is a different valve system, then you will have to do a little bit of plumbing work.

Pressurize the system to ensure there are no leaks in your new system. If so, then you may need to do some repairs depending on where you find them. After repairing any leaks you can set the tub into place install the overflow and drain kit. This is what controls the drainage of the bathtub and is installed according to the make and model. Follow the instructions with the package that you purchase.

    Leveling and Cleaning

  3. Make sure that the bathtub is level before sealing it in. There may be a slight downslope created in the tub itself to help drain it, but the tub has to be level in order not to create puddles. Place the leveling device on top of the edge of the tub to check, but not the floor. If the tub is not level, then use the shim material to make it the way it should be.

If you have to replace some tile after the tub is fit it, do it now before you finish sealing the bathtub. Use the caulk all around the tub where it meets the floor to correctly seal it in. Let it set for the amount of time instructed on the tube. If you had to take the toilet out, then you can put it back using the new wax ring even if the old one is in decent shape. Do a quick cleanup, using soap and water.
